Naperville holiday light recycling program a success

Naperville Park District collected 2,651 pounds of old, nonworking holiday lights through a recycling program it participated in for the first time.

The district partnered with Elgin Recycling, which provided large drop-off containers at five park district locations from Dec. 1 through Feb. 1. The district will receive 20 cents a pound for the lights collected for a total payment of $530.20.

The district plans to use the $530 rebate toward the purchase of preschool classroom furnishings at the Seager Park interpretive center, which is currently under construction. The interpretive center will include educational signs and displays explaining the features of the woodland and wetland habitats at the park.

Residents who still have lights to recycle may drop off them at Naperville’s Department of Public Works Recycling Drop-Off Center, 180 Fort Hill Drive, through March 15. Lights accepted for recycling include mini-lights (or Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords. For details, contact (630) 848-5000.
