Illinois corn yield decreases 10 percent

SPRINGFIELD — Carroll County corn yields topped all Illinois counties last year at 190 bushels per acre in what officials called a "disappointing" year for the state's corn crop.

The state corn yield per acre decreased 10 percent in 2010. The state averaged 157 bushels of corn per county, according to the state Department of Agriculture. It yielded 175 bushels of corn per acre in 2009.

Piatt County set a record for soybean yield per acre. It farmed 63 bushels per acre, beating the state record of 51.5.

McLean County led the state in total production for both soybean and corn. It harvested 270,000 acres of soybean and 357,000 acres of corn. Iroquois, Livingston and LaSalle counties all ranked in the top five counties for total corn and soybean production.
