Suburban star wins Sixth Man honors for Loyola

Loyola University senior guard Geoff McCammon has been named Horizon League Sixth Man of the Year, it was announced Monday by the League office.

The high-scoring sharpshooter from Roselle and Conant High School becomes the second Rambler in as many seasons to earn the award, joining forward Walt Gibler, who was so honored last year.

Coming off the bench in 16 of Loyola’s 30 games this season, McCammon enters Tuesdays’s Horizon League Championship first-round game as the Ramblers’ leading scorer with 14.5 points per game and he also paces the conference with 2.8 three-pointers per contest.

His 83 treys this season is a Loyola single-season record and he also ranks sixth on the school’s career chart with 141 triples.

One of the top three-point shooters in the region, the 6-foot-4 McCammon scored in double figures off the bench on 14 occasions this year, four times pouring in 20 or more points.

His signature performance came in a 63-62 win at San Francisco on Nov. 27 when he matched a Loyola single-game record with eight threes and finished with 26 points. He also came off the bench to toss in 27 points in a victory over Youngstown State on Jan. 27.

McCammon’s Sixth Man of the Year Award was part of the list of all-conference honors announced by the League today. Norris Cole (Cleveland State), Matt Howard (Butler), Vaughn Duggins (Wright State), Anthony Hill (Milwaukee) and Brandon Wood (Valparaiso) claimed First Team All-Horizon League honors, with Shelvin Mack (Butler), Rahmon Fletcher (Green Bay), Ray McCallum (Detroit), Eli Holman (Detroit) and N’Gai Evans (Wright State) picking up second-team recognition.
