Peavy will pitch for Sox on March 4

GLENDALE, Ariz. — It was pretty quiet on the Jake Peavy watch Thursday at Camelback Ranch.

Outside of talking some hunting with teammates Mark Buehrle and Adam Dunn, Peavy didn’t do too much a day after throwing his second live batting practice.

But he will take the mound in a real game, against the Los Angeles Angels on March 4, for the first time since detaching his lat muscle July 6 at U.S. Cellular Field. The Angels were the opponent in that game as well.

“I’m very surprised, very excited, very happy and very concerned,” manager Ozzie Guillen said of Peavy’s encouraging camp so far. “You never know. This guy, he had one injury that was a unique injury, a tough injury.

“But I talk to him every day and he feels better.”

Almost official:

Manager Ozzie Guillen still has to talk with general manager Kenny Williams and pitching coach Don Cooper, but there is little doubt Mark Buehrle is going to make his ninth straight opening-day start this year.

“My guy is Buehrle,” Guillen said. “I think if you talk to Coop it would be the same one, and I don’t think Kenny would have a problem with that. I just can’t make it official.”

In season openers, Buehrle is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 5 quality starts.

Young blood:

The White sox are going to play an intrasquad game Sunday before opening Cactus League play the next day when Gavin Floyd starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Floyd will be followed by Mark Buehrle, Edwin Jackson, John Danks and Jake Peavy.

As for the intrasquad game, there are a few unknown players Ozzie Guillen is going to keep an eye on — pitchers Miguel Socolovich and Freddy Dolsi, catcher Tyler Flowers and infielder Eduardo Escobar.

“Socolovich, he’s throwing the ball very well,” Guillen said. “Dolsi’s throwing the ball pretty good. Flowers is swinging the bat a lot better than the last time I saw him. That’s a plus.

“Escobar follows Omar Vizquel everywhere he goes just to make sure he learns the right way and learns what he should be doing.”
