DuPage businesses pass tobacco checks

Forty-six businesses in unincorporated DuPage County recently passed compliance checks aimed at preventing the sale of tobacco to minors, the sheriff’s office announced this week.

It was the second of three rounds of checks funded by an Illinois Liquor Commission grant. Officials said the grant pays for sheriff’s deputies to educate businesses on tobacco laws, then verify their compliance by sending in underage teens who attempt to buy tobacco products.

“I am pleased with the level of compliance achieved during this second round of tobacco checks,” Sheriff John Zaruba said in a news release. “Hopefully our final check in the spring will be equally successful in reducing the access our children have to tobacco products.”

The sheriff’s office has participated in the program, called “Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here,” for 10 years, officials said. The last check, in fall 2010, found two businesses in noncompliance.
