Bears-Packers moment: Martin’s cheap shot

If you want to rile a Bears fan, just bring up the name of Charles Martin.

The Green Bay defensive lineman became Public Enemy No. 1 in Chicago on Nov. 23, 1986 — and rightly so — for his cheap shot on Bears quarterback Jim McMahon.

Following a McMahon interception, Martin ran up from behind and picked up the punky QB and then slammed him into the Soldier Field artificial turf, knocking McMahon out for the game and out for the season as it would turn out.

Referee Jerry Markbreit ejected Martin, but not before some of his Green Bay teammates were caught on camera high-fiving Martin for the hit.

It would be discovered later that Martin wore a towel that day with a hit list of players he wanted to get, and McMahon was one of them.

After the game, Bears players who were still hot about Martin’s actions.

“I’d like to get my magnum and blow his (bleep) away,” linebacker Otis Wilson said.
