Geneva mayor ticketed in crash

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns received a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after a three-car crash last weekend, police said.

Burns was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with minor injuries. His Nissan Altima was totaled.

“I'm just grateful everyone is OK,” Burns said Friday. He characterized his injuries as “bumps and bruises and, of course, a bruised ego.”

Burns was driving east in the 800 block of West State Street around 5 p.m. when his car hit the back end of a Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, pushing it in to the back end of another Grand Caravan that was stopped for a red light at Anderson Boulevard. Drivers of both vehicles refused medical treatment, according to Geneva police.

Burns, 46, told officers he did not know what caused him to collide with the vehicles.

“I don't remember much before or after (the crash),” Burns said.

It was raining at the time.

Burns does not plan to contest the ticket. The fine is $120.
