Ex-Bear Moorehead to aid Geneva turf campaign

Meet a member of the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears Monday and help the Geneva Vikings at the same time.

Former tight end Emery Moorehead will be a guest on Fox Sports Radio's pregame show from 6 to 7 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, 820 Commons Drive in Geneva. The broadcast precedes the Bears-Minnesota Vikings game.

The Friends of Burgess Field, meanwhile, will be at the restaurant from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday, raising money for artificial turf for the Geneva High School field.

Moorehead will discuss the “Rebuild Burgess” project with Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns and Northern Illinois University football player Pat Schiller, a graduate of Geneva High.

There will be raffles, door prizes and sales of sports memorabilia.

Moorehead is expected to also record a promotional tape that will be used during Fox Sports radio events, urging listeners to vote for the Burgess Field project in the “Pepsi Refresh” online campaign. The project is competing for a $250,000 prize. To vote, visit refresheverything.com to vote, or text vote code 104795 to 73774 via mobile phone. Supporters can vote once a day through Dec. 31. For details, e-mail Tom Finnberg at rebuildburgessfield@gmail.com.

Geneva High is making plans to replace the field, which has problems with drainage and has lost its crown. A natural turf field is expected to cost $500,000; an artificial turf field is estimated at $1 million. The school board has said the district will not pay the extra costs of artificial turf, but is willing to install it if money is raised privately.
