Lakes’ girls basketball team keeps achieving firsts.
The Eagles beat Antioch 63-53 Saturday to capture fifth place in the Geneva tournament
“This is a good win for us,” said coach Pete Schneider, whose Eagles finished 2-2 in the tourney. “Other than this summer, we have never beaten Antioch before. The hard work and all of the games this summer are paying dividends.
“I cannot say enough about the work ethic and positive attitudes these kids have.”
The Eagles were the aggressors, going to the foul line 33 times and converting 19 of their free throws.
Antioch went 7 of 12 from the line.
“We like it when we make more free throws than the opponent takes,” Schneider said. “It shows that we are playing hard and our intensity is up.
“Antioch is a good team and is figured by some to be the best in the (North Suburban Conference) Prairie Division this year. They are experienced and can shoot the ball.”
Schneider credited Katie Brinser and Ashlee Cunningham for playing what he called incredible defense.
“It made the difference,” Schneider said. “Their shooters did not get any easy looks.”
Lakes had balanced scoring again, as Terese McMahon led the way with 16 points. Evan Morris and Cunningham each scored 11, Ashley Parmly tallied nine, and Amanda Smith chipped in eight.
“We will always be able to put five kids on the floor that can score,” Schneider said. “We are deeper with good talent on this team.”
Antioch was led by Andi Potkonjak with 16 points and Lauren Tiffany with 14.
“Playing in this tough tournament will help us this season,” Schneider said. “We have seen and played against some very good teams.”
Stevenson 66, Crane 29: At Maine West, the Patriots continued to roll.
Michelle O’Brien led Stevenson (4-0) with 16 points. Anna Morrissey had 15 and McKinley Imus added 13.
Evanston 36, Grant 30: At Deerfield, Donnie Taggart scored 11 points in the Bulldogs’ loss.
Grayslake Central 64, Regina 38: At Buffalo Grove, Rebekah Llorens scored 16 points to lead the Rams.
Kat Dickson added nine.
