The White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Waldis Joaquin off release waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Joaquin, 23, made San Francisco's Opening Day roster in 2010, compiling a 9.64 ERA (5 ER/4.2 IP) in four relief appearances before being optioned to Class AAA Fresno on May 1. He was 1-2 with a 4.93 ERA (19 ER/34.2 IP) and 33 strikeouts in 23 appearances (five starts) with Fresno and also made four starts with the Rookie Giants in the Arizona League.

Joaquin, 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, has gone 17-12 with a 3.13 ERA (106 ER/305.0 IP) and 279 strikeouts in 146 games (39 starts) over seven minor-league seasons after signing with the Giants in 2003 out of his native La Vega, Dominican Republic.

He also is 0-0 with a 6.46 ERA (11 ER/15.1 IP) in 14 major-league outings with San Francisco (2009-10).

With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 35.
