Scouting Montini at Kaneland

No. 6 Montini (10-2) at No. 1 Kaneland (12-0)

Class 5A semifinal

Game time: 5 p.m. Saturday.

Last week: Montini 24, Marian Central 10; Kaneland 27, Vernon Hills 21.

Outlook: A battle of spread offenses. Montini is the defending 5A state champion; Kaneland, last in the semifinals in 2006, seeks a title trip for the first time since it won 3A in 1997 and 1998. Montini quarterback Matt Westerkamp has thrown for 2,324 yards, 26 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, overwhelmingly targeting Joey Borsellino, Anthony Taylor and all-stater Jordan Westerkamp, Matt's cousin, who has caught 72 passes for 1,299 yards, 17 touchdowns. Kaneland all-state quarterback Joe Camiliere has made it tougher for foes to pinpoint while throwing for 2,662 yards, 35 touchdowns, only 5 interceptions. Quinn Buschbacher's 49 grabs for 783 yards, 10 touchdowns, heads five Knights with at least 23 catches. Led by Camiliere and tough Blake Serpa, the Knights also have compiled 491 more yards rushing than Montini. While the Broncos' strength of schedule and physicality usually lend an edge, Kaneland counters with athleticism and experience.

Advancement: The winner advances to the Class 5A state championship game against the winner between Peoria Richwoods (12-0) and Chatham Glenwood (9-3).
