Flyers hold off Fielders; Cougars blank Bees

The host Schaumburg Flyers survived a ninth-inning rally to defeat the Lake County Fielders 4-3 in Northern League action at Alexian Field on Monday night.

Flyers starter Dustin Glant (7-4) allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 8 innings with 4 strikeouts to pick up the victory.

In the ninth, the Fielders (30-43) trailed 4-2, but Jeff Dunbar drove in a run with an infield single. Reliever Brian McCullough stranded a runner on third base to notch his third save for the Flyers (29-44).

The Flyers' Richard Mercado (4-for-4, 2 RBI) hit his sixth homer in the sixth innning and also had a double. Tommy Fitzgerald drove in a run with a single.

The Fielders' Jeff Dunbar belted his 14th homer, a solo shot in the seventh. Juan Valdes had 3 hits, including an RBI single in the eighth that scored Guillermo Martinez. Adam Hale had a double in the ninth.

Alec Lewis took the loss in his second professional start, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits in 41/3 innings.

Fielders all-star left fielder Jason Short was named Northern League player of the week. Short, who is tied for league lead in home runs with 24, hit 6 homers, batted .333 (10-for-30), scored 9 runs and drove in 13 in eight games to earn the honor.

Cougars 8, Bees 0: With their 8-0 victory at Community Field, the Kane County Cougars improved to 11-1 this season against the Burlington Bees and reached a season high for games over .500 at nine.

The Cougars are 26-17 in the second half and own a 21/2-game lead over Clinton for the top playoff spot in the Western Division of the Midwest League.

Ian Krol (9-4) pitched 5 shutout innings and scattered 7 hits to earn the win.

Jason Christian had a double and triple and drove in 2 runs, Anthony Aliotti had an RBI double and Jose Crisotomo had an RBI single.
