Sheley attorney requests special prosecutor

GALESBURG, Ill. -- Defense attorneys involved in a murder case for an Illinois man suspected of killing eight people have asked for a special prosecutor.

Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin filed documents Monday in Knox County Circuit Court requesting the special prosecutor. Karlin represents Nicholas Sheley, who is charged with killing eight people in Illinois and Missouri in 2008.

A judge has ordered Sheley's defense can request testing or services without the prosecution's knowledge of presence. Karlin says the special prosecutor is needed because "a party to these orders has failed to comply."

Sheley has pleaded not guilty in the death of 65-year-old Ronald Randall of Galesburg. The trial is set for next year.
