Barreiro to coach IBCA North all-stars
When the Class 3A-4A North all-star girls basketball team takes the floor June 12 at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center, it will be coached by the dean of Mid-Suburban League girls basketball coaches and a recent award winner.
Barrington's Babbi Barreiro was recently honored as the District 6 co-coach of the year after her Fillies advanced to the Libertyville Class 4A sectional final this February.
Barreiro's team finished at 19-13, including a win over Mid-Suburban League champ Wheeling in the Waukegan regional championship.
Barreiro will be coaching a North squad that includes area players such as Ashley Capotosto of Elk Grove, Janelle Cannon and Bianca Szafarowicz of Wheeling, Maddie Swan of Hersey and Audrey Bauer of Lake Zurich.
Barreiro, an Elk Grove High and Indiana University graduate, has won 295 games in 17 seasons with nine regional titles, five MSL division crowns, two MSL titles and one sectional.
She has the most wins in Barrington school history for boys or girls basketball.
"It was most definitely an honor to be recognized by my peers for this award," Barreiro said. "I thank the IBCA. I feel honored to get the opportunity to be a part of the athletic department at Barrington High School and I feel fortunate to work with such great athletes and my assistant coaches. I am thankful for them. And good years or tough years, working with high school kids is so rewarding - it truly is."
Women's softball
Northwestern senior Nicole Pauly (Palatine) led the Wildcats to three conference wins, smashing 5 extra-base hits in four games. Her 3 home runs in that span not only put her third on NU's all-time homer list with 51 but they also helped her earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors.
The infielder is hitting .500 in Big Ten play.
• University of Chicago senior Kathleen Duffy (Barrington) slugged a pair of home runs in the opening game (2-1 win) of a doubleheader at 17th-ranked Carthage College.
With the 2 homers, Duffy became the Maroons' all-time leader with 19.
Her 2 RBI increased her season total to 36, the most in school history.
• Central College junior Kiley Lythberg (Prospect) belted a grand slam and went 3-for-3 while pitching a combined 5 shutout innings in a two-game sweep of Cornell College. Lythberg is 16-5 with a 1.78 ERA and had the first grand slam by a Central pitcher since Laurie Sutten's dramatic walk-off shot that won the NCAA Division III regional title in 1986.
It was the fifth homer for Lythberg, who is hitting .356 after not batting her first two seasons at Central, which is rated 12th NFCA D-III top 25 Poll.
• Augustana senior Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine) continues to lead the Vikings (28-11) in hitting. She is batting .440 with 48 hits in 109 at-bats with 29 runs scored, 8 doubles, 9 home runs and 29 RBI.
• Carthage freshman Krystina Leazer (Elk Grove) was named a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Softball Player of the Week.
Leazer went 5-0 with a 2.18 earned run average over 35.1 innings pitched with 23 strikeouts and no walks.
She was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 game against Elmhurst and a 12-4 game against Millikin.
The win over Millikin gave the Lady Reds their first CCIW softball title since 1998.
In nonconference action, Leazer defeated Ripon 8-2, the University of Chicago 4-2, and Judson 6-2.
Women's volleyball
Notre Dame senior Megan Fesl (Hersey) was a 2010 recipient of the O'Connor Award, which honors male and female student-athletes who best display the total embodiment of the true spirit of Notre Dame as exemplified by their contributions and inspirations to their respective teams.
Fesl was a pivotal cog in leading the nationally-ranked Fighting Irish volleyball squad to a regular-season Big East title and a trip to the NCAA tournament this past season.
A marketing major in the Mendoza College of Business, Fesl is a member of Notre Dame's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the third volleyball player to receive the O'Connor Award in its 17-year history.
• Hersey sophomore Kristen Pedersen and junior Alexa Stedman of the Sky High volleyball club will be headed to the USA Jr Volleyball Nationals in Reno, Nev.
They are members of Sky High 17 Red team which qualified at the Great Lakes regional qualifier.
Men's tennis
Oakton Community College coach Neal Sipkovsky (Maine West) has guided his team to the NJCAA men's national tournament in Plano, Texas.
Sipkovsky's team qualified by finishing second at the Region IV tournament hosted by Moraine Valley Community College. This is the second consecutive year he has coached the Raiders to the national tournament.
He was named the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year.
Baseball
Eric Romani (Maine West) of McKendree University is the The American Midwest Conference's Pitcher of the Week honoree.
Romani, a sophomore right-hander, earned a win and save in his two appearances. Romani is tied for the team lead with 13 appearances and is 2-0 overall with 2 saves.
• Wil Osmanski (Elk Grove) won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week award for pitchers.
Osmanski, a senior, went 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in three appearances during the week. He started twice and had a complete-game performance at UW-La Crosse.
Osmanski held the Eagles scoreless through eight, but an unearned run helped UW-La Crosse rally for a 3-2 win. He worked out of a bases-loaded 11th-inning jam to earn a win against UW-Stout and then pitched 7 innings to earn the victory. He allowed 3 runs in getting the win.
• Freshman infielder Ryan Tuntland (Maine West) leads Oakton Community College with a .418 batting average. He also has 41 RBI.
Tuntland was named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference All-Conference first team along with teammates Alex De La Rosa (Loyola), Tim Scanlan (Prospect) and Shane Uhle (Prospect).
• North Central (28-5, 15-3) swept Augustana and its magic number is 1 in order to clinch the CCIW conference championship. The last conference championship was in 1998. Andrew Wulbecker (Hoffman Estates) batted .500 including 2 doubles, a home run and 5 RBI while Matt Burke (Palatine) hit .455 including 2 doubles and 5 RBI.
FootballJunior Sam Lialios (Buffalo Grove), a top receiver at North Park University and Nick Pantaleo (Hoffman Estates), a top defensive player at North Park were named to the CCIW Academic All-Conference team for the 2009-2010 school year.Men's track and field bull; North Central freshman John Wood (Fremd) was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14 feet, 9 inches in the Concordia Cougar Invitational .Wood then improved his qualifying mark in the pole vault, clearing 16-51/4 to win the event at the Benedictine Twilight Invitational.bull; North Central's Michael Spain (Schaumburg) improved his provisional qualifying time in the 5,000-meters (personal best of 14:28.81), finishing fifth at the Drake Relays.Relay for LifeTo help celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day on Tuesday, June, 1, the American Cancer Society and the Schaumburg Flyers have teamed up for a special promotion called "Relay for Life at Alexian Field."There will be a survivor parade before the game and the players will wear pink jerseys, one of which will be auctioned off to benefit Relay for Life. Schwent also ran in the distance medley relay, which finished 16th in 12:35.99. bull; North Central sophomore Kala Bingham (Barrington) was a member of the 4x800 meter relay team that placed 15th in 9:37.17. Bingham was also part of the distance medley relay that ran 12:35.99, placing 16th overall. VolleyballFormer Daily Herald Athlete of the year Molly May has been hired as the girls volleyball coach at Lakes High School.May, who is a Spanish teacher at the school, is the boys junior varsity coach at Antioch. The former three-sport star at Prospect played four years of volleyball and track and field at Illinois Wesleyan. She has been an assistant girls volleyball coach at Normal Community and Prospect and an assistant track coach at Elk Grove.
