Mundelein Robotics Team takes sixth in competition

The Mundelein High School Robotics Team, under the guidance of adviser Scott Brumund, took sixth place awards at the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Midwest regional competition held at the University of Illinois at Chicago. FRC is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high school students discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and technologists can be.

More than 40 Illinois high school teams took part in the regional competition. The process involves the creation of a working robot that will perform designated tasks. A strict timetable must be followed to meet the rules of the competition. Sponsored by Motorola, the MHS team worked many hours throughout the year to meet its goal.

In 1997, Motorola sponsored the first regional event held outside of New England for FIRST Robotics, at Harper Community College in Palatine. In 2000 as the size of the event grew, the regional moved to Northwestern University in Evanston and in 2005 it moved to its current location at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Each year, the game that is "played" by the robots changes.

"Congratulations on the success of the Robotics Team," David Greenwood, Ed.D., math/science department chair, told Brumund. "I was impressed by how consistently your robot performed. The kids did a great job working together as a team and making quick adjustments between rounds. I was proud to be associated with your team," he said.
