Weathered Crow feathers the home nest

The owner of a new Grayslake shop features accessories for the home that shoppers won't find at larger stores.

Agnes Clark is taking experience gained in a career in the retail industry in launching The Weathered Crow at 101 Center St.

"I'm offering things here that are truly different. It's things that you would not find anywhere else," Clark said.

She attempts to fill her store with merchandise made in the United States.

Home accents are the thrust of the business. Highlights include gifts, candles, jewelry, window coverings, rugs and lights.

"It's things that make the home cozy. It's stuff you don't see all the time," Clark said.

A line of floral items has been popular, she said, as well as the Ugly Doll line ranging in price from $7 for key rings to $23 for plush products.

Furniture is another aspect of the store. Clark's husband, Scott, makes some of the pieces including shelving, sofa and end tables.

The Clarks, who reside in Round Lake, have a 16-year-old daughter who attends Grayslake Central High School.

Agnes Clark said candles are among the top-selling items at the store, which opened less than six months ago.

The 1803 Candle line has been a draw, too, with the hand-dipped soy candles made in Illinois, Agnes said.

In fact, the name of the shop comes from the name of a candle scent in the line. "I liked the name," said Clark about the brown sugar, caramelized nut scent called Weathered Crow.

Clark admits that opening a business today is risky.

"It's make it or break it right now," Agnes said, adding that they're trying to weather the storm. "It's tough. It's baby steps."

She said she wants her merchandise to create a homey feel.

"It's back to basics," she said.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
