Naperville restaurant rolls in with train fare

A new train-themed family restaurant that opened recently in Naperville is becoming popular.

Customers are waiting for nearly a half-hour during peak dining times at Choo Choo Johnny's, at 3103 W. 111th St.

Diners in 60 seats along two counters have their meals delivered by trains, and there is room for another 30 customers in booths.

The business, which opened about a month ago, also features an interactive train display and a floating train track around the ceiling.

The menu features more than 40 items including Vienna beef hot dogs that sell for between $3 and $4, salads, beef sandwiches, wraps and hamburgers.

Owner Jennifer Gutke of Plainfield said the business has been going over well.

"We did more than we ever expected to do in our first month," she said.

This is the first franchise for John and Patricia Ethell, who operate the first Choo Choo Johnny's in Frankfort and founded the company six years ago. The couple, graduates from Eastern Illinois University, are raising three daughters.

The owners of the new Naperville location were looking for a franchise opportunity when they discovered the train restaurant.

"There's nothing like this in the Naperville area," said Gutke, 35, who operates the business with her husband. The couple is raising two young sons.

The business employs about 15 people. The servers dress as engineers with overalls and train hats.

Birthday parties are also held at the establishment.

The owner said specials are held throughout the week. Kids receive free ice cream with their meal on Monday and Tuesday, seniors receive a 10 percent discount on Wednesday, a balloon artist is on hand from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and Friday is $3 shake day.

The business is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
