Jailed sheriff faces murder for hire charges

MURPHYSBORO -- A southern Illinois sheriff already accused of selling marijuana, often while on duty, now faces charges of solicitation of murder for hire.

Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin was in custody at the Jackson County Jail on the drug charges when was arrested Saturday.

His wife, 36-year-old Kristina Martin, and son, 20-year-old Cody Martin, were arrested as they came to visit him.

All are being held on $1 million bond. They're scheduled to make their first court appearance Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear who their attorneys are.

Authorities would not release details on the new charges and wouldn't say whether they're related to the drug charges the sheriff already faces. He's been in custody since May.
