Neighbors in Need campaign again underway to fight hunger, homelessness, health care issues

I’m proud to announce that the Daily Herald is again joining forces with the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to help address issues of hunger, homelessness and health care in the suburbs.

As we approach the holiday giving season, it is normal to turn attention to the less fortunate among us and try to help. It is important, too, to remember that the need is not merely a seasonal concern but an issue that pressures families all year long.

The Neighbors in Need grant program, now in its sixth year, aims to help food pantries, health assistance providers and agencies assisting the unhoused meet these needs in the suburbs.

Since the program was launched in 2021, it has generated nearly a quarter-million dollars to further the work of suburban-based charitable organizations. Now, we’re again seeking help identifying organizations to fund.

Representatives of charitable organizations whose work focuses on hunger, homelessness or health care can email me by Oct. 15 at jslusher@dailyherald.com. Please use “Neighbors in Need” in the subject line.

Volunteers and recipients of services from various organizations are welcome to encourage leaders to reach out, but requests should come from the organizations themselves.

The Daily Herald will publish stories about the grant recipients in November and December. The McCormick Foundation will contribute 50 cents for every dollar readers donate to the Neighbors in Need Fund. So, for every $1 readers donate, $1.50 will go to charities operating in the suburbs.

We look forward to bringing you reports of important charity work going on in the suburbs. We hope you will watch for our stories and recognize that the need is real and the work to meet it is valuable.
