People criticize ICE arrest at Kane County courthouse
People are again criticizing federal law enforcement agents over an immigration-related arrest made at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles, and how they treated onlookers recording the arrest.
Posts on X and Facebook show a video of a man being handcuffed, bent over a low stone wall, at the public entrance. As he moves his right arm out to the side and raises his head, an agent quickly pushes the man’s face down onto the stone.
Several posters on Facebook said the man’s skull was broken.
The video shows an agent pointing a stun gun at one man, but he did not deploy it. The video also shows an agent shoving a man backward down a sloped landscaped area. Agents can be heard telling people to back up.
At least one of the agents was wearing a vest that said “POLICE ICE.”
The video does not indicate when the arrest happened.
A message has been left with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requesting information about the arrest.
Comment has also been sought from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. That office provides security for the Judicial Center and the grounds.
On May 31, protesters recorded video of the immigration-related arrests of two men outside the front entrance of the sheriff’s office, which is next door to the Judicial Center. The men had just been released from jail, where they were serving sentences.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said no laws were violated because the state’s TRUST law does not stop agents from entering public spaces, such as the Judicial Center and the parking lots.
Kane County forbids the use of county property for staging areas, processing sites or operational bases for civil immigration enforcement. But Mosser has repeatedly said that the ban is not enforceable. She said it violates the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
State law also prohibits federal immigration agents from detaining people with civil immigration cases within 1,000 feet of courthouses, if those people are at the courthouse to conduct business.
