Multiple rounds of severe weather expected throughout suburbs today

Severe storms are likely throughout the suburbs today, with the biggest threat to the south, according to National Weather Service meteorologists at the Romeoville bureau.

The first round is expected between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. today bringing the potential for damaging hail and destructive wind gusts of up to 75 mph. Flash flooding is also possible and a watch is in place for much of the suburbs through 9 p.m. The highest threat is south of Interstate 80, according to forecasts.

A second round of storms is expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. with the threat of tornadoes and wind gusts in excess of 80 mph.

Again, the biggest threat is to the south of Interstate 80, but the risk remains elevated in the northern suburbs because of a warm front that is moving into the area with the storms. Meteorologists say the location of that warm front will affect the power of the storms in the area.

Forecasts for the remainder of the week show high temperatures in the 70s Thursday and Friday with some wind and more storms possible Saturday.
