Update: Suspect in custody after Arlington Heights break-in, standoff

Police responding to a reported burglary in progress at an Arlington Heights home Thursday morning rescued a family from an armed intruder, authorities said.

Hours later, a large police presence remained on the scene in the 800 block of North Chestnut Avenue amid a standoff with the suspected perpetrator.

Police announced Thursday afternoon that the standoff has ended peacefully and a suspect is in custody. Additional information will be forthcoming, police said.

The events began shortly after 7:33 a.m. when police officers called to the single-family residence determined a suspected armed offender was inside with two homeowners, officials said.

The residents were able to secure themselves inside a bedroom and call 911, according to Arlington Heights police.

Officers burst into the home, located the residents and led them outside to safety, police said. During the rescue, officers reported hearing a gunshot inside the home, authorities said.

Police set up a perimeter while additional officers, including tactical officers from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, arrived to assist.

“We have someone surrounded in the house that was dangerous, and (police) are trying to solve that right now,” Mayor Jim Tinaglia said.

Tinaglia said the family that lives there is “safe.”

Nearby schools were notified and placed on a soft lock down, as was the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Residents of several neighboring homes were evacuated, including Jack Murray, who said he observed police throwing flashbang grenades through a window of the surrounded home.

“I was coming home and I thought maybe it was a gas explosion,” added neighbor Debra Baruch.
