Huntley clinches FVC Valley title outrightFeb 8, 2014 11:00 PM - The Huntley girls basketball team clinched the outright championship of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division Saturday with a 69-34 win over Jacobs in Algonquin. The title is Huntley's first in girls basketball in the FVC. The Red Raiders last won a conference crown in 2002-03, their last year of competition in the Big Northern Conference.

Barrington wins, with help, at McHenryFeb 8, 2014 9:09 PM - For a while, it looked as if the expected race for the big trophy would not materialize between favored Deerfield and challengers Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South and host McHenry. As it turned out, Lake Zurich which was just a click behind Deerfield nearly two hours into the Class 3A regional. But a funny thing happened on the way to the round of wrestleback semifinals -- so funny that Barrington coach Ken Hoving finally managed a small grin when he saw his club pull within reach of Deerfield, trailing just 119-113 in advance of the medal round. Later, after celebrating individual titles from Matt Stathakis (103, 29-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 29-10) and saying thank you to his FVC coaching counterparts for their help along the way, Hoving broke into a broad smile midway through the finals when the scoreboard flashed his Broncos were now atop the leaderboard at 146.0-136.5. Five weights later, and after a trio of second-place finishes, the Broncos got one last bit of help at 195 as Ryan Grannemann of McHenry defeated Christo Moran of Deerfield 4-1, helping get the Broncos a fourth straight regional championship.

Boys basketball/Fox Valley roundupFeb 7, 2014 11:45 PM - Westminster Christian 48, IMSA 37: The Warriors (12-10) defeated IMSA during first round action of the NAC Tournament. Robert Kleczynski led Westminster with 13 points, while Brad Barker scored 12 points. "Great job defensively. This is a pretty good win for us," said Westminster Christian Coach Bruce Firchau. Burlington Central 58, Genoa-Kingston 49: The Rockets (16-6, 6-2) beat the Cogs during Big Northern East competition Friday. Sean Fitzgerald led all scorers with 19 points, including 5 3-pointers. Reed Hunnicutt finished with 11 points and James Raney scored 10 for the Rockets.
