Lentils make for quick, protein-packed dinnerOct 19, 2011 3:48 PM - Brown lentils are humble little legumes that often get overlooked for a desperate dinner. While it's true that you don't have to soak them as you do other dried beans, brown lentils still take an hour to cook. That might rule out most of the possibilities they could offer a desperate cook. But what if the lentils were cooked already?

Always season for potato saladOct 11, 2011 8:20 AM - Does potato salad have a season? I don't think so. But in a recent conversation with several self-proclaimed "foodies," I found out some folks think it is strictly a spring/summer side dish. Potato salad ingredients are simple, inexpensive and readily available year-round, so why not serve it in the fall and winter?

Smoked pork chops for dinnerOct 6, 2011 4:39 PM - Deja vu in the grocery store: That's just what it felt like last week. Walking through my local supermarket, I glanced down in the meat case and spied an old reliable just begging to be picked up -- smoked pork chops. I haven't cooked with smoked pork chops in at least five years, and I don't know why. They're quick and easy. They're tender and flavorful.

'Iced' cream, you scream, we all scream for 'iced' creamSep 22, 2011 12:01 AM - A friend of mine called the other day and announced: "I'm making homemade ice cream on the deck today. Come on over." Funny how all my "straightening up the house" plans for that Sunday afternoon disappeared at the words "homemade ice cream." That invitation got me thinking: When is the last time I made homemade ice cream? Years ago, for sure. I've been on a sorbet kick for a while now and had all but given up on ice cream. Why? Mainly because it seems like too much work.

Thai sauce spices up chicken saladSep 1, 2011 6:00 AM - Usually when I'm eating salad in a restaurant, I can figure out the ingredients. Today's recipe for Courtyard Bistro Asian Chicken Salad With Chili-Lime Vinaigrette is an exception. (The chefs at Marriott headquarters in Washington, D.C., were kind enough to share their recipe.)

Chicken sausages save dinnerAug 24, 2011 3:57 PM - One night I was digging through my freezer meat shelf looking for some shrimp to throw into a spaghetti sauce. And then I spotted some chicken sausages just begging to be dinner. The sausages had been pushed to the back for a few weeks, and now, it was as though I had hit the jackpot.
