Bare crawl space creates humidity problem
Oct 21, 2018 7:00 AM - Q. We live in a house that is more than 100 years old. Two rooms in the house are over a very narrow crawl space (too narrow to fit a human). These two rooms are damp (leather and wood gets white mold on them).

Patio settles and creates potential water issues
Oct 12, 2018 6:00 AM - Q. I completely enjoy your column and advice/direction. We moved into our new home seven years ago and thought we were so clever to have a patio poured before the grass went in, so the concrete truck would not damage anything. We did due diligence. My husband works for a municipality and worked on a concrete crew frequently, so he has a very good understanding of the process and do's and don'ts. So, we did lay a healthy layer of gravel and tamped it down until the cows came home.

Must a microwave be installed in a cabinet?
Oct 5, 2018 6:00 AM - Q. I have a very old microwave oven that I want to replace. When the installer from the store I purchased the new microwave oven arrived at my house to install it, he said he couldn't install it because there was no cabinet above where it was to go. He said there was nothing to attach it to. But my present oven is on the wall above my stove (exactly where I want the new oven) and it is not attached to any cabinet. It looks like it is in a case attached to the wall and that the oven slides inside the case.

Old basement floor tile should not be disturbed
Sep 30, 2018 7:00 AM - Q. Back in the summer, some 20 years ago, water got in my cellar. There was carpet on the floor as well as a pad. The water soaked the carpet and seeped into the bottom of the drywall. While removing the carpet and pad I found vinyl tile squares had been laid on the cement floor. I am not sure when this tile was installed. Now there are two things I am worried about. One, is there a good chance the tile may have asbestos in it. Two, I am a bit worried about mold. There are some faint black spots about 6 inches up the Sheetrock from the floor in some places.

Cigarette odor can be difficult to remove
Sep 9, 2018 7:00 AM - Q. I have a home I'm selling in New Mexico. It's a 1,300-square-foot brick ranch 25 years old. A relative lived there and was a heavy smoker. I had the home completely rehabbed, and carpet, base trim, furniture, window treatments, light fixtures and all cabinetry and bath fixtures were removed, so the home was down to bare walls.

Tips on deck flooring for screened porch
Sep 2, 2018 6:00 AM - Q. We just saw this decking in the Menards sale flyer that came with our newspaper. Maybe we could put this on top of the existing pressure-treated floor at 90 degrees to the current flooring and get a tight seal. This would be good because we are adding storm windows to this existing raised deck/porch (about 4 feet above grade) and this would seal the current floor openings so this one-season room would become a three-season room.

Cold air coming through fireplace
Aug 26, 2018 6:00 AM - Q. We live in an end unit condo, which is about 22 years old. We have a lot of cold air coming into our living room through our fireplace even with the flue closed. When we've had our chimney cleaned over the years, no chimney cleaner has mentioned any problem to us.

Pressure-treated wood should not be painted
Aug 19, 2018 6:00 AM - Q. This photo is the floor of our screened-in porch. Please provide suggestions for refinishing -- paint, vinyl planks or other. We are not interested in outdoor carpet.
