    Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien is used to the spotlight, and the Pirates junior was definitely shining brightly in her own right Saturday at the Mark Saylor Mid-Suburban League girls track and field indoor meet. O’Brien earned two state medals last season, including taking second in the 1,600. She continued to impress in the fall by finishing third at the Class 3A cross country state meet. O’Brien kept things rolling on Saturday, taking first in the 800-meter run (2:17.42) and 1,600 (5:05.91) in powering the Pirates to the title with 117.5 points at North Central College in Naperville.

    With junior pitcher Mark Smith struggling in relief of senior starter Jim Perkins, Cary-Grove baseball coach Don Sutherland was looking for someone to give the Trojans some quality innings out of the bullpen. Senior pitcher Nick Franz, who is expected to be in the Trojans’ starting rotation this season, provided Sutherland what he was looking for. Shutting out Schaumburg on 2 hits in 4 innings of work, Franz helped Cary-Grove earn a 6-6 tie in eight innings in nonconference action in Cary Thursday afternoon.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East boys water polo champion Hersey earned an 11-4 win over Schaumburg in its first MSL action of the season. Jake Hall had 4 goals and Eric Dieterich had 3 to lead the way for the Huskies, who held the visiting Saxons with a goal in the third period on Wednesday. In other action, Buffalo Grove and Palatine picked up MSL crossover wins.

    Saying the final 1:54 of the Class 4A boys basketball regional semifinal at Wheeling on Tuesday night was wild would be putting it mildly. Anything that a high school sports fan could want happened in the final two minutes. When it was all said and done, No. 4 sectional seed Lake Zurich escaped with a 44-41 win over No. 13 Schaumburg to advance to Friday night’s finale against St. Viator, which advanced with a 49-48 win against Prospect.

    When Schaumburg’s boys basketball team plays well, it can be tough to beat. When Brendan Parker plays well, the Saxons can be even tougher. That was the case Monday night during the opening round of the Class 4A regional at Wheeling. Parker scored 16 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals in the Saxons’ 63-30 knockout of Fenton.

    Sam Silva scored a team-high 15 points and Paul Weiss had 14 to help Christian Liberty Academy past Roycemore 52-27 in a Class 1A boys basketball regional opener at Chicago St. Benedict on Tuesday.

     
  • Conant’s Alexander bounces back, grabs third Feb 22, 2015 12:42 AM
    Bobby Alexander and his coaches at Conant had it all planned out in their atttempt at a 138-pound wrestling state championship. But Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy had a similar plan, and it turned out his carried the day. On Friday night, the talented sophomore dashed Alexander’s title dream with a hard-fought 3-0 victory in the semifinals, sending the Cougars standout into wrestlebacks. Alexander certainly made the best of things. On Saturday afternoon, he led six Mid-Suburban League medalists by claiming a third-place finish to cap a sensational four-year career.

     
  • Peak performance powers Barrington Feb 21, 2015 8:39 PM
    Right on schedule, the Barrington boys swimming team was peaking. That paid serious dividends at the Illinois High School Association sectional meet the Broncos hosted Saturday afternoon. Barrington led the way with six champions out of 12 total events, all of whom advanced to next weekend’s state meet at New Trier. The Broncos also had eight total qualifiers, the most among a crowded field of strong squads, including Stevenson, which won the team title with 238 points.
