    Grayslake Central’s softball team picked up its first two wins of the season Tuesday. Playing their first two games at the Walt Disney complex in Orlando, Fla., the Rams beat Springside (Pennsylvania) 11-1 and then defeated Dwight (New Jersey) 14-0.

  • Grayslake Central splits in Orlando Mar 24, 2015 10:08 PM
    Making its ninth consecutive trip to the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., Grayslake Central’s short-handed baseball team opened its 2015 season by splitting its first two games. The Rams lost to Van Buren (Arkansas) 5-2 under the lights on Monday night, before bouncing back to defeat Southridge (Oregon) 8-2 Tuesday. Grayslake Central is playing this week without ace Justin Guryn, who was hit by a batted ball in practice. His status for returning to game action remains in question.

  • Weissenstein credits Ashley for career achievement Mar 23, 2015 2:06 PM
    When he was student at Prospect High School, Steve Weissenstein said it was a privilege having many incredible teachers who provided invaluable inspiration. But one did stand out. “I had so many incredible teachers and coaches at Prospect who inspired me, and I understood the impact they had on my life,” Weissenstein said. “But without a doubt the man who had the biggest impact on me was my freshman basketball coach, Ron Ashley.” After playing for Ashley, Weissenstein had pretty much made up my mind that he wanted to be a teacher and coach. Almost 40 years later, he has succeeded pretty well at both, to say the least. In 2009, Weissenstein was named the Glenbrook South High School’s Teacher of the Year. This May 2 on the campus of Illinois State, the long time Titans boys and girls basketball coach will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

    Lake County’s basketball stars are set to be showcased again. The sixth annual Lake County Senior Shootout High School All Star Basketball Game will take place on Friday April 3 on the campus of College of Lake County in Grayslake. The game consists of the top high school senior boys and girls players in Lake County.

    After four innings in Monday morning’s ‘breakfast special’ at the Rosemont Dome, the Hoffman Estates softball team held a 6-0 lead over Lake Zurich. But the Bears started to eat away at the lead with 1 run in the fifth and sixth innings. Then, in the top of the seventh, Lake Zurich took its biggest bite. The Bears scored 5 runs to grab a 7-6 lead which held up for the final score in the scheduled 8 a.m. contest that started late due to the adverse driving conditions early in the morning.

    Warren 6, Huntley 4: Shannon Walsh went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI but defending Class 4A state champion Warren scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to outlast Huntley at the dome in Rosemont. Jessica Shields and losing pitcher Tiffany Giese also had RBI for the Red Raiders (1-1). Hampshire vs. Dundee-Crown ppd.: The scheduled game between Hampshire and Dundee-Crown at the Rosemont dome was postponed due to weather and travel concerns The game will be made up on Thursday at 10 a.m. Hampshire’s scheduled game at Marian Central for Wednesday has also been moved to the dome.

    A five-run fourth inning and a 4-run seventh pushed Mundelein's baseball team to a 14-3 victory over host Carbondale on Monday. Wes Farmer led the Mustangs with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate while Sam Osisek went 4-for-5 and Nick Brune went 3-for-4.
