    Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation which requires the state’s 1,800 private schools to conduct annual drills to prepare for potential school shootings. Several private school administrators in the suburbs said, however, that the legislation will only reinforce what they are already doing. “We have been, for several years on an annual basis, going through lockdown drills,” said the Rev. Corey Brost, the president of St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights.

    With one swing of the bat, Montini first baseman Jake Mencacci accomplished quite a bit Thursday afternoon. The swing came on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 2-2 tie against Riverside-Brookfield and Division I pitcher Will Kincanon. The swing resulted in a two-out triple to deep right field that drove in the eventual game-winning run in the Broncos’ 4-2 victory.

    It’s usually difficult to beat a team three times in a season, but Montini is making softball look easy these days. The Broncos defeated Suburban Christian Conference rival St. Francis for a third time this season, winning 11-1 in five innings in Tuesday’s Class 3A Glenbard South sectional semifinal. The Broncos will meet either Lemont or Glenbard South in Saturday’s sectional final.

    Katelyn Hill was on the cusp of Glenbard South athletic history Saturday on the second day of the Class 2A girls track and field state finals. The Illinois State recruit had already captured the first individual state championship for the Raiders in nine years with her win in 14.84 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Hill began her day at Eastern Illinois University on the second leg of the Raiders’ 400 relay that Taylor Blohm Bivins’ anchor propelled to a seventh-place finish.

    Glenbard South knows if it can hand the baton to anchor runner Katelyn Hill near the front of the pack, the Raiders senior will give her team a great chance to win most relays. At Friday night’s Class 2A girls track sectional, the host Raiders had a small lead when Hill took over in the night’s final event, the 1,600 relay, and when Hill was done doing her thing, Glenbard South had easily held off runner-up Montini with a winning time of 4:04.06. The race capped off another big night for Hill as well as for her team, which has now claimed five straight sectional crowns.

    At the end of the 400-meter run, Marmion senior Andrew Grahovec sprinted right behind his twin brother, Kevin, drawing a laugh just before they finished in third and fourth place. “He didn’t know I was there till I got up to him,” Andrew Grahovec said. “Then we both laughed because it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s us.’” Yes it was. Marmion won eight events, double-scored in 11 and scored in all 18 events, the landslide winner of the Suburban Christian Conference boys track meet Wednesday at Aurora Central Catholic’s Bob Stewart Field.
