Longtime real estate columnist retires her typewriter
Oct 12, 2019 6:00 AM - It was December of 1975. My husband, Norman Lank, was a Realtor who received word that the Sunday paper was about to start a real estate section. No more lumping real estate with the women's news. I got to thinking: What would they put in this new section? Something like Ann Landers' column -- real estate questions and answers?

How to sell a lakeside vacation retreat
Sep 21, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. My wife and I am approaching our 80s and thinking about selling our cottage. It is on the water at the Eastern end of Lake Ontario. Do we contact a Realtor where the cottage is located, or one who's close to where we live?

Overhead power lines make house difficult to sell
Sep 7, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. Our parents passed away and left their house for us to sell. It's been on the market for one year now, and we haven't had any offers. The problem is when people come up to the driveway, all they see is an electrical field and transmission lines. It's about 20 yards from the house. They do not even want to look at the house.

Hard to fool assessor with artificially low home sale price
Aug 17, 2019 6:00 AM - Q. I have a house for sale for $260,000, and I received a $220,000 offer for the house and a $40,000 offer for "fixtures." My assessment is $229,000. The buyer wants to keep the assessment (and property taxes) low.

More reader comments on home staging
Aug 10, 2019 6:00 AM - Readers are still sending in comments about the rant from a seller who resented trying to live in her professionally staged home while it was on the market. Some sellers agree but say that staging is worth the discomfort. Some sellers disagree. And at least one reader evidently misread the letter.

Understand the difference between decorating and staging
Aug 3, 2019 6:00 AM - A few weeks ago, a reader wrote in with what she called a rant -- an account of the "grief" she and her husband felt after their real estate broker staged their longtime home to put it on the market. She couldn't believe buyers would rather see a house in which she and her husband were "imprisoned."

Absentee real estate investment
Jul 29, 2019 12:45 AM - Q. My son is interested in renting out his home, as he received a job offer in another state. Three years ago, I bought your book, "The Home Buyer's Kit," to help him. Does this book have current information for landlords, or do you have another that would guide us?
