    Lake Zurich, on Throw Back Night in its old gym, pulled out a North Suburban Conference Lake Division squeaker in jaw-dropping fashion, 46-45. With 17 seconds left and Lake Zurich down by a point, guard Mike Travlos brought the ball up the length of the floor. To his surprise, as weaved around in the frontcourt, the entire right side of the lane suddenly parted like the Red Sea and Travlos drove to the basket unobstructed and unguarded.

    On Saturday night in the first game of a girls-boys doubleheader, the Blue Devils never trailed from the opening bell. Leading scorer Kristen O’Brien had 18 points, and the ninth-grader Rebekah Foley added 13 points in the 56-29 romp over Lake Zurich.

  • Barrington wins, with help, at McHenry Feb 8, 2014 12:00 AM
    For a while, it looked as if the expected race for the big trophy would not materialize between favored Deerfield and challengers Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South and host McHenry. As it turned out, Lake Zurich which was just a click behind Deerfield nearly two hours into the Class 3A regional. But a funny thing happened on the way to the round of wrestleback semifinals — so funny that Barrington coach Ken Hoving finally managed a small grin when he saw his club pull within reach of Deerfield, trailing just 119-113 in advance of the medal round. Later, after celebrating individual titles from Matt Stathakis (103, 29-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 29-10) and saying thank you to his FVC coaching counterparts for their help along the way, Hoving broke into a broad smile midway through the finals when the scoreboard flashed his Broncos were now atop the leaderboard at 146.0-136.5. Five weights later, and after a trio of second-place finishes, the Broncos got one last bit of help at 195 as Ryan Grannemann of McHenry defeated Christo Moran of Deerfield 4-1, helping get the Broncos a fourth straight regional championship.

    The many local teams that journeyed to Bloomington Friday with high hopes in the state cheerleading competition were whittled to a smaller number of finalists in a long day of competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Preliminary results are in for all four divisions, and the competition will resume Saturday morning at 11.

  • Vernon Hills to defend Prairie title Feb 7, 2014 12:00 AM
    Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team will defend its North Suburban Conference championship after holding off host Grant 59-46 in the two teams’ NSC Prairie Division finale Friday night. The Cougars (21-5) finished 10-2 in the NSC Prairie, tying Antioch for the championship. By virtue of beating the Sequoits twice in as many games, Vernon Hills will play in the conference championship for the third year in a row.

  • After six years, Color Me Mine ceramics studio in Kildeer is closing. The owners will continue to operate a store in Vernon Hills.

    The owner of Color Me Mine paint-it-yourself ceramics studio announced Wednesday that it will close the Kildeer location on Feb. 17. Natasha Braxton of Mundelein said it is “with a heavy heart” that she has to close the studio, but will keep her Vernon Hills location open.
