Oregon Pinot production up
Nov 5, 2021 11:00 PM - When we were young, we used to take Amtrak trains on a circuit all the way around the U.S. and rarely leave the bed of our sleeper car for the entire trip. Our meals were even delivered there.

Forget red and blue. Wine tasting compares red and whites from presidential states
Nov 5, 2021 5:00 PM - With just weeks left until the election, many questions remain to be answered, including whether the Obamas really have a built-in wine cellar in their house and, if so, what's in it; whether Sarah Palin prefers Australian Shiraz or a hearty red Rhone .

Dangers in the Shiraz aisle
Nov 5, 2021 3:09 PM - The Australian wine industry has hit a rough patch. It's sitting on a lake of surplus wine - the equivalent of around 50 million cases as of last year. Exports dropped 13 percent in terms of volume, and 12 percent by value, for the year ended in July. She'll taste, too, thanks
Nov 4, 2021 8:31 PM - Q. At a restaurant recently, we both studied the wine list and I suggested a Pinot Noir. We both discussed our choice with the waiter. When he brought the wine to the table, the waiter then poured some wine into my husband's glass. While Larry was busy swirling and sniffing and tasting, he missed the fact that I was glaring at him from across the table. I have now asked him to please pass the glass to me after he has tasted the wine so that I, too, can taste it before nodding approval to the waiter. This is at least to open the eyes of the otherwise intelligent and charming waiters that perhaps a woman has something to contribute to this event.

South African wines definitely worth a taste
Nov 4, 2021 12:08 AM - We have been writing about the wines of South Africa for years and have recommended looking for them, but it seems clear from our visits to wine stores that South African wines haven't caught on as quickly as wines from some other places.

Too much Merlot is mediocre these days
Nov 3, 2021 7:45 PM - Merlot's midrange crisis We wouldn't normally have Merlot for our anniversary, but this is special. Our column is 10 years old this week, and since the very first wine we wrote about was American Merlot, it seemed like a good idea to revisit it. Or at least it seemed like a good idea at the time.
