'Cars in the Woods' debuts in Riverwoods with historic vehicles

Car enthusiasts and their families are invited to enjoy "Cars in the Woods," the inaugural Riverwoods Invitational Car Show, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Flatwoods Heritage Center on the grounds of the Riverwoods Village Hall, 300 Portwine Road, Riverwoods.

A maximum of 25 historic autos will be on display, and the only requirement to exhibit is that the car(s) must be owned by a Riverwoods resident.

Riverwoods residents who own a collectible car (old or new) who would like to display it can contact John Maxson at (312) 933-3239 or Norman Noerper, (847) 975-6794. There are a limited number of car spaces. Cars and their owners should arrive at 10 a.m.

"This is a non-judged show set up only for enjoying the cars," said Maxson, a longtime collector. "We are not focused on any particular type of car; however, we would anticipate modern sports cars, 1960s muscle cars, restored classic cars, and very old antique cars to be on exhibit."

Maxson's collection includes his Model A Ford, purchased for $400 when he was in high school and restored twice.

Car owners already scheduled to exhibit include Ed Clement, Allan Hirsch, Mike Mattenson, John Maxson, Jim Neill, and Norm Noerper. They welcome the opportunity to visit with guests and discuss their cars' uniqueness and back story. Examples of cars that will be on display include:

• 1931 Ford Model A

• 1934 Bentley Drophead

• 1941 Packard Model 120

• 1949 Willys Jeepster

• 1956 Ford Thunderbird

• 1959 Corvette Roadster

• 1970 Dodge Challenger

• 1972 Ford Bronco

• 2000 Rolls-Royce Corniche

• 2004 Thunderbird

• 2012 Porsche 911S

There is no charge to attend. Guests are welcome to stay and picnic outside the village hall; parking will be available. The village hall will be open for access to restrooms and water fountains.
