Piecemakers Quilters to celebrate 10 years of community service
On Feb. 4, Piecemakers Quilters will celebrate 10 years of quilting and service dedicated solely to survivors of domestic violence.
With almost 1,500 handmade quilts donated, to date, in partnership with A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center, they are welcoming the public to join in as they honor their past and look to the future of the all-volunteer organization.
The open house celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in the Fellowship Hall of St. Peter United Church of Christ, 45 Church St., Lake Zurich. Social distancing will be in place; masks are optional.
The program will include remarks by Damaris Lorta, chief development officer of A Safe Place, who will inform and update those present about A Safe Place and the critical role they play in helping Lake County survivors of domestic violence.
In addition, there will be a short quilt show of completed quilts ready to be donated.
Guests will be able to see how the Piecemakers work together - in person and virtually - and learn about how they might be able to help them with their work going forward by sewing, tying fleece blankets, donating cotton fabrics and other supplies, tax deductible cash donations, or just telling their friends about the group.
Guests can also enjoy a BYO brown bag lunch and a piece of celebratory cake.
Come and meet some of the local quilters from Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties. Membership has no dues or other costs and does not require the purchase of machines or other supplies.
Making and giving quilts and blankets to the people of all ages escaping domestic violence may seem like just a drop in the large bucket of the help they need to restart their lives. Still, the thank-you notes and letters the group has received over the last 10 years touch the quilters' hearts as they describe how the quilts bring them warmth, comfort, color, and beauty at a time when they've had to leave everything else behind.
