NSYMCA celebrates Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month's 2023 theme, "Black Resistance," the North Suburban YMCA is highlighting Chicago's role in the Underground Railroad.

The programming will include visual displays throughout the Y's facility, 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.

"Black Resistance" explores how African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, including slavery and the racial terrorism of lynching, racial profiling and police killings. The Underground Railroad refers to the network used by enslaved Black Americans to obtain their freedom in the 30 years before the Civil War.

The Railroad soon became a catalyst for propaganda as both the abolitionists and slave owners used tales of escape to gain popular support for their cause. The abolitionists used the stories of successful escapes to rally to action those who supported the causes of equality and freedom.

"Black history is American history. We not only celebrate Black astronauts, scientists, inventors, artists and activists of the past, we also celebrate the rise of Black business, arts and literature that will influence the future," said Megan Vazquez, senior wellness director at the NSYMCA.

"At the Y, our programming goes beyond Black History Month. It's about building an inclusive community for everyone, regardless of ability, age, background, ethnicity/race, faith, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation," said Kathy Fielding, NSYMCA CEO.

The Black History Month display is presented by the NSYMCA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee, a collective of NSYMCA staff and board members, and the YMCA Education Series (Y.E.S).
