Have fun while helping homeless pets during Pawction 2022

The holidays are all about spreading good cheer, shopping for the perfect gifts and opening your home to others - maybe even a furry, four-legged friend.

At the West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) holiday fundraiser, you could do all three at the same time!

Whether or not you can rescue or foster a homeless cat or dog this holiday season, you CAN make a big impact on their lives by supporting West Suburban Humane Society - all with a few clicks on your keyboard.

For the seventh year, WSHS is hosting Pawction, an online auction of specialty gifts that culminates with an exclusive evening of viewing auction items, plus plenty of fun and entertainment complete with wine and hors d'oeuvres.

"Pawction is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, which we depend on to take care of our animals, especially during the holiday season when there are so many in need," said Carolyn Mossberger, executive director of WSHS.

The people will be having the fun and the dogs and cats will be the ones to benefit from the annual Pawction, an online auction with one evening of fun and silent auction bidding to benefit the West Suburban Humane Society. Bidding opens online Nov. 30 with the in-person event set for Saturday, Dec. 3.

"Many people adopted pets during COVID. Now we're back to the new normal, and we're seeing a slowdown in adoptions."

The slowdown means all aspects of WSHS need your support, whether that comes from monetary donations, fostering, volunteering or participating in fundraisers like Pawction 2022.

The auction features gifts that give back - designer handbags, gift certificates, baskets with something for everyone on your holiday shopping list - all great presents for others or yourself. Items can be previewed online beginning Monday, Nov. 28, with bidding starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30. Bidding closes at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, after the in-person Auction Showcase, which begins at 5 p.m. at the WSHS Adoption Center in Downers Grove. Tickets for the exclusive event - only 50 tickets will be sold - are $75 per person. Guests 21 and older are welcome.

WSHS is a "no-kill" shelter, typically defined by a save rate of 90%. WSHS's save rate is 98 percent. It never euthanizes for space or time constraints.

"We work with animal control, which is required to take animals in, and they keep them for three days," Mossberger said. "We rescue from those places first to prevent them from being euthanized."

WSHS is 100% funded by individual, corporate and foundation donations. With more than 450 active volunteers, WSHS cares for about 200 animals at any given time.

The efforts of WSHS to improve the lives of animals would not be possible without the support of its corporate sponsors, including Gerald Subaru of Naperville, which has been supporting WSHS for years.

"We are thrilled to continue supporting the West Suburban Humane Society," said Alec McKean, Vice President of Service for the Gerald Auto Group. "We are so proud of all they have accomplished and can't wait to see what the next 50 years brings."
