Sally Booy, an assistant coach for Lake Forest College's women's basketball team from 1989 to 2008, will be recognized with the Golden Whistle Award at the Forester Athletic Recognition Ceremony during Homecoming Weekend (October 7-8).
The Golden Whistle Award is one of two major honors sponsored by the Forester Athletic Network (F.A.N. Club) and recognizes individuals who, over several years, have made significant contributions to Lake Forest College Athletics and its Tradition of Excellence as a coach. Booy will join Dick Triptow, Reid Ingersoll, and Ken Klein as recipients of the award.
Booy helped lead Lake Forest to the first conference championship in program history in 1992 and the team added league titles in 1994, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2007. The Foresters made five NCAA Tournament appearances during her tenure and reached the second round while hosting regional competition in 2007.
Lake Forest won more than 75 percent of games (349-114) during Booy's 19 years on the sideline and prevailed at least 14 times in each season. The Foresters were even more impressive in league play, posting a .791 winning percentage (208-57) while qualifying for the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament in 13 of those years.
Forester players were named all-conference 46 times during Booy's tenure. Six of them also earned various levels of All-American accolades and eight have been inducted into the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Since retiring from coaching, Booy has remained engaged with Forester Athletics. She regularly attends home games of numerous teams at the College and can often be found volunteering her time at the scorer's table or in the press box. A long-time member of the F.A.N. Club, Booy has been a regular at the organization's annual golf outing. She has also connected with and impacted student-athletes in all sports through Speed Networking and other Forester Game Plan career planning events.
"I am humbled to be receiving this award," began Booy. "My years of coaching were some of the best, most enjoyable times of my life. It was an experience I will always cherish and I love continuing to pay it forward."
"The contributions Sally has made to the success of Lake Forest College Women's Basketball and Forester Athletics are immeasurable," commented Lake Forest College Vice President for Athletics and Career Advancement Jackie Slaats, who was the team's head coach throughout Booy's career. "She was such a valuable assistant to me and an excellent mentor and role model for our players, both on and off the court. In addition, her commitment and dedication to the Athletic Department over the last three decades has been truly remarkable. She continues to be a valued member of our Forester Family."
The Forester Athletic Recognition Ceremony will take place on October 8 at 10:30 a.m. and will be held in the Lake Forest College Sports and Recreation Center. Booy will also be honored on the field at halftime of the football team's game against Illinois College, which begins at 2:00 p.m.
