Long Grove-Kildeer Garden Club's annual Plant Sale, May 14-15, at Reed Turner Nature Center, Long Grove

Unique shopping opportunity for perennials, botanical art, garden décor and books

Janet Healy

Spring has sprung, and it's time to start thinking about our gardens and landscapes. So, mark your calendar for the Long Grove-Kildeer Garden Club's annual plant sale, held at Reed-Turner Nature Center, rain or shine. Dates are Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This plant sale is unique in that there are tables full of perennial plants for sale that were actually grown in the garden club members' gardens. These are tried-and-true performers for our local soil and climate, and include grasses, flowers and other perennials.

Look for varieties of ever popular heirloom tomato plants and milkweed plants. Milkweed is the only plant that the endangered monarch butterfly will lay their eggs on, so you can help stop the decline of these beautiful creatures by planting milkweed in your garden.

The award-winning Reed-Turner botanic artists will be selling their botanical artwork, including originals, prints and cards. These works of art will brighten your home all year round.

Every garden needs more than just plants. Garden décor, whether to place in the garden or to display on walls of garden sheds or patios, will be offered at very affordable prices.

Finally, there will be lots of gently used gardening books for sale at bargain prices.

The Reed-Turner Nature Center is at 3849 Old McHenry Road in Long Grove.
