Palatine scholarship recipients awarded marketing internships

Marketing agency Nancy Burgess Strategic Marketing Inc., taps first-year university students Rebecca Ruffalo and Jillian Smith

The Chicago-area marketing agency, Nancy Burgess Strategic Marketing Inc., has chosen first-year university students Rebecca (Becca) Ruffalo of Hoffman Estates and Jillian Smith of Palatine as the agency's inaugural, spring semester marketing interns.

Both women were also recipients of the Women in Business Advisory Forum (WIBAF) scholarships that were awarded last year. Agency owner Nancy Burgess is a member of the WIBAF, a Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce women's networking group.

Burgess said she met the women at a WIBAF event last summer. She originally planned on offering just one marketing internship.

"I was very impressed with both women, so I expanded the scope," said Burgess, who describes herself as a lifelong learner. "I look forward to sharing my experience and insights with them, and I'm confident I'll learn so much from them as well."

Ruffalo, a graduate of William Fremd High School, attends the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington. Smith is a Palatine High School alumna and is studying at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Both women are focused on degrees in business and maintain an interest in marketing.

In the first month of the internship, the women will learn about content marketing and social media marketing strategy.

"I took a class about LinkedIn last semester," said Ruffalo. "I'm looking forward to applying that knowledge at my internship."

Smith is also eager to get started.

"I'm looking forward to writing and designing social media posts in the business world," she said.
