ECC offers college and career readiness workshops

Elgin Community College's College and Career Readiness Event Series continues in the new year on the second and fourth Tuesdays. District 509 students, parents, and guardians are encouraged to participate.

"The purpose of these events are to provide our community with free, easily accessible, professionally led trainings regarding college and career readiness," said Marisela Morales, new student readiness coordinator at ECC.

• You have the world at your fingertips, now what? Let ECC help you narrow down your possible paths.

Join "Discovering Careers" from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, to learn about various career types, assess where your passions currently are, and determine the skills still needed.

This program is intended for seventh- to 12th grade students.

• Do you know how big the financial aid umbrella really is? Explore the various ways to pay for college and the differences between federal aid, work-study, scholarships, and grants in "Introduction to Financial Aid" from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25.

This program is intended for sophomores to seniors and their parent or guardian.

• "Career Clusters and Opportunities" will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8.

What is a career cluster? How many clusters are there? How does one get into their field of interest?

Join this workshop to receive answers to these questions and more.

This program is intended for seventh- to 12th grade students.

• Did you know there's no standard award letter template? Join this session of "Financial Aid Awards and Scholarships" to better understand the components of a Financial Aid award letter as well as scholarship confirmation and how to make the best decision for you.

It will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22.

This program is for juniors and seniors with their parents or guardians.

• Transferable Skills: The Skills You Want" is aimed to expand your knowledge on abilities and skills that can be applied to a range of situations in life, from school to work, and that are highly sought-after by teachers and employers. It will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8.

This program is intended for seventh- to 12th grade students.
