An Elgin Old Tyme Holiday Radio Show returns for the fifth year this weekend

Elgin Theatre Company, for the fifth year in a row, is presenting for your viewing and listening pleasure, three totally new 1950s original radio scripts centered around the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays!

With the pandemic afoot previously, we had to provide these hilarious and heartwarming shows for a couple years only as recordings on WRMN, the local Elgin radio station.

But for the 2021 holiday season, you will again have live radio studio type presentations here in Elgin. So grab your masks and proof of vaccinations or negative COVID-19 tests and come on out to join these hilarious happenings from the Golden Days of Radio, a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit!

This year's three shows are as follows:

• "Thanksgiving With Bernice" is another great "Our Miss Brooks" episode that made Eve Arden famous in the late 1940s through the '50s when it finally also became a TV show. It is Thanksgiving week and there is only $5 cash available to purchase a turkey for the celebratory dinner. Most of the Madison High staff and teachers have already solidifies their plans but Connie Brooks hasn't even thought about it until now. The wonderful humor starts here and gets even more funny as the day goes on. Original commercials provided through Colgate Toothpaste and Lustre-Creme Shampoo.

• "The Christmas Gift" Lucille Ball was initially made famous on radio for her portrayal of the wife in My Favorite Husband. Her quirky thinking and actions are found here as in later episodes when she decided to find out what kind of gift her husband, George, was actually giving her for Christmas. You will have a laugh a minute in this offering. Show sponsor is Jell-O Pudding.

• "A Visit from St. Nick" is a heartwarming story wrapped around what happens on Christmas Eve when a human mother and a mouse mother are each trying to get their children in to bed and asleep. Then Santa Claus could pay a visit. Included is a snippet of how busy Santa and the Elves are at the North Pole getting ready for the big sleigh ride packed with presents!

"Elgin Old Tyme Holiday Radio Show 5," directed by Julie Price, will be presented Nov. 12-14 and 19-21 at the Elgin Art Showcase on the 8th floor of the Elgin Professional Building, 164 Division St. in downtown Elgin. Friday and Saturday performances start at 8 p.m. and Sunday performances start at 2 p.m. Sunday performances will be interpreted for the hearing-impaired.
