Delnor to host Summer Bike Rodeo and car seat safety check July 10

On Saturday, July 10, Northwestern Medicine and the Kane County Safety Coalition are offering a bike rodeo and car seat safety check from 10 a.m. to noon. The free event will take place in the southwest parking lot at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, 300 Randall Road in Geneva.

The bike rodeo will include a bike safety check, safety stations, helmet fittings and a raffle. Participants are invited to ride through a bicycle obstacle course. Safety stations will provide information on proper hand signals, situational awareness and more. Participants should bring a bike and bike helmet and wear closed-toe shoes. The Batavia Bicycle Commission and Cykel Cycles bike shop are lending a helping hand.

"Wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of brain injury by 88 percent," said Julie Crabb, BSN, RN, program director of trauma and EMS at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital. "We love kids, but we really don't want to see them in the emergency room. We want kids to stay safe by wearing a helmet and learning proper cycling techniques."

Car seat checks include car seat safety inspection, as well as harnessing and installation education. Certified child passenger safety technicians will teach parents and caregivers current laws and best practices to keep children safe in a vehicle from birth and beyond. Participants are encouraged to bring their children and the car seat manuals if available.

Physical distancing guidelines will be in place which will require the use of masks for persons over the age of 3.

To register for the Car Seat Safety Check Event, please call (630) 933-4234. No registration required for the bike rodeo.
