19th Judicial Circuit announces Law Day contest winners

To celebrate Law Day, grade school and junior high schoolchildren throughout Lake County participated in coloring and essay contests sponsored by the 19th Judicial Circuit.

The judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit honored the winners in a virtual ceremony. Next year the annual high school courthouse tour and the in-person award ceremony will return to the Law Day event.

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day as a day of national dedication to the principles of government. In 1961, by a joint Congressional resolution, May 1 was designated as the official date for celebrating Law Day in the U.S.

This year's theme was "Advancing the Rule of Law Now." The rule of law is the bedrock of American rights and liberties in times of calm and unrest alike. This year's theme is intended to remind everyone that citizens share the responsibility to promote the rule of law, defend liberty and pursue justice.

The rule of law is a set of principles for ensuring an orderly and just society, such as that no one is above the law, everyone is treated equally under the law, everyone is held accountable to the same laws, there should be clear and fair processes for enforcing the laws, there should be an independent judiciary, and human rights must be guaranteed for all.

First-, second- and third-place winners in kindergarten through eighth grade are recognized for their winning entries in the various Law Day contests: illustration, coloring, poster, and essay. The students will be notified and certificates of achievement and a gift card donated by the Lake County Bar Foundation will be mailed to each winner.
