Bloomingdale Garden Club hosts '5 Ways to Preserve the Harvest' May 18

The Bloomingdale Garden Club will present "5 Ways to Preserve the Harvest" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Cornerstone Faith Community Church, 118 First St. in Bloomingdale.

Food blogger and cookbook author Emily Paster will present five ways to preserve your garden harvest from canning, to freezing, to drying, and root-cellaring.

She will distribute her "Freezer Cheat Sheet" which demystifies the process and benefits of freezing local and homegrown fruits and vegetables - as well as an overview of safe water-bath canning procedures and helpful resources.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. with announcements at 6:45 p.m. The program begins at 7 p.m.

Masks must be worn. Visitors are always welcome.

The annual spring flower and plant sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 14, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Bloomingdale Park District maintenance building, 259 Springfield Drive in Bloomingdale. The building is located on the north end of Springfield Park, between Schick Road and Lake Street.

The sale will feature professionally grown annuals in pots and flats, including premium 10- and 12-inch hanging baskets, geraniums and accent plants, specialty annuals, cannas, grasses, tropicals and King Tuts grasses, vegetables, and herbs, as well as perennials from members' gardens.

There also will be a Master Gardener help desk, gardening items for sale, and raffles. They will be accepting cash, check or credit cards.
