Third-grade teacher at Lake Villa's Prince of Peace School receives recognition

Prince of Peace Catholic School, a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon school, is pleased to announce that Mary Rooney, a third-grade teacher and assistant principal, has been chosen as a #SchoolHero by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Ms. Rooney has been at the Lake Villa school for more than 45 years and is considered indispensable by students and staff alike. She is a strong advocate for children and believes in encouraging students to increase their confidence, both inside and outside the classroom. Adored by her students, her earliest students have even brought their own children back to be taught by Ms. Rooney. She is a 2000 Golden Apple recipient and a 2010 Distinguished Service Award recipient. Colleagues listen to her wisdom and insights, and her smile, ready laugh and infallible energy make everyone's day brighter.

“Ms. Rooney helped me through both academic and social challenges while I was a student at Prince of Peace, and she's one of the reasons I became a teacher. I am lucky to have kept in touch with Ms. Rooney over the years and, although it has been almost 20 years since I sat in her classroom, she has impacted my life forever,” wrote a former student.

Principal Dr. Stephanie Stoneberg added, “Mary is a living example of 'love the children first, then teach them,' and this is evident in the way she not only teaches but lives her life. She encourages joyful learners and is a mentor and friend to faculty, staff, students and families. She just knows what each student needs to succeed and ensures that they receive that and more. We truly are blessed to have her as part of our community.”

The Archdiocese of Chicago introduced the #SchoolHero program in at the beginning of the academic year to recognize school employees who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic to continue bringing quality education, safety and care to in-person and remote learning students and families. These employees consistently go above and beyond to ensure a safe, productive learning environment.
