Genealogist to share tips on researching common Jewish surnames on March 21
"Finding Your Kaplans" is the title of a free genealogy webinar about researching common Jewish names for the Sunday, March 21, 2021, virtual meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Mindie Kaplan's live streaming presentation will begin at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time, and will be preceded at 1 p.m. by a members-only genealogy question-and-answer discussion time.

Mindie Kaplan has been involved in Jewish genealogy for more than 20 years. She has previously presented at the 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020 IAJGS International Jewish Genealogy Conferences, given presentations at local Jewish genealogy societies and attended nearly every IAJGS conference since 2003. Mindie says a genealogy research project often requires a family historian to try to answer such questions as: Where do I look for Harry Glassman in NYC? What happened to Max Kaplan's daughter Eva? How do I know that I have found the right ship manifest? This live session will present case studies of how to research common names in different cities and time periods in the U.S., tips for breaking through brick walls, and how to confirm your findings with traditional research methods.
Mindie will also discuss when and how to use stories, photos, DNA, and other non-paper resources. You'll walk away with a list of concrete techniques that can help you find that elusive ancestor, she says.
