Lavelle Law Charities drive raises $25,000 for Schaumburg Food Pantry
Lavelle Law Charities wrapped its annual food drive last week, and although this year's event was held virtually, the Schaumburg-based law firm was able to raise $25,000 for the Schaumburg Food Pantry.
In years past, the attorneys at Lavelle Law would collect and deliver truckloads of food to the Schaumburg Food Pantry, but COVID-19 restrictions made that impossible this year. Instead, the drive moved online and raised $15,000. Lavelle Law Charities then matched the first $10,000 donated to help fight hunger in the community.
The donated funds will be used by the food pantry to purchase food to assist more than 900 families who use the facility each month. According to Diana Nelson, associate director of Program Support and Community Outreach for the Township of Schaumburg, the need has been increasing, with 930 households visiting the food pantry in the last month. That accounts for almost 2,800 individuals needing assistance.
"We've been hosting food drives in the suburbs for more than 10 years, but this year is particularly special because our community continued to help those in need despite the challenges presented by COVID-19," said founding partner Kerry Lavelle.
"Many people are facing financial struggles of their own, but still did their part to make the holidays a little brighter for others."
Lavelle Law Charities, NFP, an extension of Lavelle Law, is a not-for-profit IRC Section 501(c) (3) charitable organization that serves many in the Chicago area.
