Just like namesake, annual Walter Payton Toy Drive won't be deterred

COVID-19 has impacted the families at Saint Viator High School just like those around the country. While it is one of the few Chicago area schools to pursue a full return to in-school learning this fall, the experience has not been without its challenges. Despite several brief periods of eLearning due to health concerns in the school, and the reduction or loss of many sports and activities, the students and faculty have persevered over the past three months. Now, led by Senior Class leadership, the school is holding firm to its annual commitment to the Walter Payton Toy Drive.

Running an abbreviated campaign this year, students are encouraged to donate a toy in the days leading up to Thanksgiving break. The overall goal is to reach 700 gifts to be donated this holiday season.

"Our students are faith-filled, ready to serve and fully engaged in the Viatorian Mission,"said Anne Marie Lowery, director of Student Activities. "They are fully committed to this annual initiative to have a positive impact on the lives of others."

Students are encouraged to bring a new toy to school for collection this week. All are asked to consider COVID precautions and bring only toys, art supplies or other items that are easily wiped down.

The Walter Payton Toy Drive is an annual tradition at Saint Viator where Payton's son Jarrett is an alumnus.
