Honoring Our Heroes

Long-time Honor Flight Chicago volunteer Dan Harrington was pleased to have the opportunity to honor 77 heroes on Veterans Day. Dan, a resident of Arlington Heights, became the Vice President of Senior Living at Lexington Health Network earlier this year. He has been an active volunteer with Honor Flight Chicago for 12 years. The nonprofit organization takes American veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials that honor their service.

Having worked in senior living for 20 years, Dan was initially drawn to Honor Flight Chicago after hearing about the amazing experiences of veterans living in his community.

"They would come back, so excited and honored about their visit to Washington D.C. I encouraged more residents to participate, and then decided that I wanted to be more directly involved with the Honor Flight organization," he said.

Dan has traveled as a guardian for veterans flying to D.C. to visit their memorials more than 20 times.

For his first Veterans Day working with Lexington Square Lombard and Lexington Square Elmhurst, Dan was excited to help the team members honor the resident heroes. In addition to special meals, gifts, and entertainment, Honor Flight Chicago plaques were made for each veteran.

"The veterans' responses to receiving the gifts clearly showed that they were touched by the recognition and respect bestowed upon them. I continue to volunteer with Honor Flight Chicago in order to show my gratitude and appreciation to these heroes,"Dan said.
