Need Help Paying Home Heating Bills?

Wheeling Township residents who are having difficulty affording the cost of gas or electric bills can apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) at the Township office. Since 2011, Wheeling Township has handled nearly 5,600 LIHEAP applications; over the last year, 698 applications were processed.

"We are always concerned for residents who are experiencing financial hardship, but especially this year with so many people facing extra challenges arising from the pandemic," said Wheeling Township Supervisor Kathleen Penner. "LIHEAP funding can help to offset the high costs of heating bills."

For those who qualify, LIHEAP sends a one-time grant payment directly to the resident's utility company, which remains on the account until it is depleted. This year, because of so many unforeseen complications from COVID-19, the qualification income guidelines have been increased to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Those interested in applying must provide documentation, including a current photo ID, social security cards for everyone living in the household, current utility bills, and all sources of income over the last 30 days. Additional documentation may be requested.

Income guidelines for 2020/2021 LIHEAP applications are as follows:

Household Size; Gross Income for 30 Days Prior to Application

1 $2,127

2 $2,873

3 $3,620

4 $4,367

5 $5,113

6 $5,860

7 $6,607

8 $7,353

Residents who meet the income criteria should call the Wheeling Township General Assistance Department to schedule an appointment at 847-259-7730. Appointments will be given on a first-come, first-served basis until May 31, 2021, or until funding is exhausted. Appointments are limited due to social distancing and sanitizing; masks must be worn at all times in the Wheeling Township building, located at 1616 N. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights.
