St. Francis High School junior achieves perfect SAT score

St. Francis High School junior Emery Carlson has earned a 1600 on the SAT, the highest possible score achievable. About 2.2 million students take the test each year and less than 1% get a perfect score. The average score in Illinois is 1011. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and Bryan Carlson of Batavia.

"Emery is the type of student that teachers love to teach," said English teacher Matt Gorski. "She is highly intelligent, but her skills and attributes are not limited to academics - she is also a great leader and a wonderful person who genuinely cares about helping others. Emery demonstrates an intellectual curiosity and a commitment to excellence that extend well beyond the classroom, and she is one of the most remarkable students I have ever taught."

"Emery always strives to do her best, no matter the subject areas," adds Mike Lynch, Business & Technology Department Chair. "She is not as comfortable in a business class as she is in her science and math classes, but she looks at this as an opportunity to excel in something new."

Emery is currently a member of the National Honor Society, SALT (Student Ambassador Leadership Team), and Student Ministry Team, as well as participates in Girls Varsity Swimming at St. Francis High School.

"I'm honestly not surprised," said Bridget Buckley, Director of Counseling, upon hearing the news. "Emery is so intelligent and hardworking, in addition to being incredibly thoughtful, conscientious, and kind. I am so proud of Emery for this incredible accomplishment."

"We are very proud of Emery for achieving a perfect score on the SAT," adds Principal Raeann Huhn. "Emery has always been very goal oriented. She is an incredibly well-rounded student and is a great example for her classmates."

The SAT Suite of Assessments is an integrated system of tests that measure what students are learning in class, and what they need to succeed in college. The SAT includes a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test. The SAT also features an optional essay component, which some colleges will require. Questions throughout the assessments focus on skills that matter most for college readiness and success, according to the latest research.
